DIY Canvas

DIY Canvas

I am always on the hunt for easy DIY projects and budget friendly decor, this DIY canvas is the perfect combination of both.  A few years ago, I came across this DIY Canvas idea on a blog called I Should Be Mopping The Floors.  You can check her post out HERE.  It was such a fun project to make, I wanted to share it with you.

Step 1: Painting the Canvas

I started by painting a base coat on the canvas.  I used my trim paint, which is Shoji White by Sherwin Williams.  Once I had a solid coat on the canvas, I was ready to paint.

Step 2: Taping the Herringbone Pattern

For my project, I choose to use 3 smaller canvas, instead of one larger one.  To tape off the pattern on the canvas, I used a level and blue painters tape.  I actually used the level to space the tape out evenly!  It worked like a charm.  I laid all three canvas down next to each other to ensure the pattern was consistent across all three canvas.

Step 3: Another Coat of Paint

To help get crisp lines, use the base color again and paint towards the tape.  If there happens to be a spot where the tape isn’t sealed well…the paint will fill it in.  Since it is the same color you will never know.

Step 4: Add Color

To add color, I went down to my basement and grabbed a bunch of colors.  I had already painted the bathroom mirror a light turquoise color, so I knew I wanted that color to tie in the canvas.  I also added Galapagos Turquoise, Coastal Villa (which is the greige color), and a metallic Gold paint.  Somehow I didn’t end up with a picture of this, sorry about that.  I used one color at a time, laid all three canvas down and just randomly painted.  Once I finished with one color, I would grab another color and did that until all the spaces were painted.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Now that all the color is painted, I pulled the tape off and waited for it to dry.  Once it was dry, I used a medium grit sandpaper to rough it up.  You can sand as little or as much as you want.  Just keep in mind the more you sand, the more paint you will take off and the more rustic it will look.

Step 5: Hang your Canvas and Enjoy

It really is such an easy project!  It hangs in my half bathroom and adds some much needed color and interest to that small space.
