5 Inexpensive Ways to Spruce Up Your Home

Have you ever noticed how we become oblivious to the things we are around every day?  Especially in our homes.  Like my fireplace for instance…I sat by it everyday for probably two years before I actually looked inside and saw how dirty it was.  It seems, we never take the time to spruce the house up, even if it is inexpensive!

Need another example, I have plenty.  We bought a new thermostat about 3 years ago and I just noticed the other day that we never touched the paint up around our thermostat.  Not a big deal right, well the new thermostat is smaller than the old one so there is a different paint color.  When I finally realized, I just starred at it.  How in the world had I not noticed that?!

I get it…life is busy.  The crazy thing is…a little spruce up doesn’t take that much time and money.  Plus, if you are snowed in like I am, it is the perfect time to do it!  But keep in mind, we are talking about a little freshening up…not a full remodel!

So here are a few inexpensive ways to spruce up your house, it’s amazing what a big difference it will make.

5 Ways To Spruce Up Your House

1. Wash The Walls

I know, this sentence probably makes you want to run in the opposite direction just like it makes me!  Which also means your walls are probably long overdue, just like mine.  Especially in the hallway and stairwell, where all the little hands touch the walls.

About two months ago, my sister hired me to clean her 4,000 square foot house (since she had already moved out of state and she needed to get it ready to sell ).  The walls were really dusty from construction projects and I came across this great tutorial on how to wash walls from Clean My Space.  It made it quite easy…and it really does make a huge difference in your home.

How To Wash The Walls:

  •  First you will need to dust the walls. To do this, use a microfiber cloth on a Swiffer mop.

  •  Next grab a mop and bucket. In the bucket, mix a little dish soap in with warm water.

  •  Now wipe the walls down.

You may need to scrub the dark scuffs with something slightly more abrasive.  If that doesn’t seem to remove the scuffs, then you can always proceed to step 2…paint touch ups!

2. Paint Touch Ups

It seems like there are always places that need a little touch up.  In August, we taped streamers up on my daughter’s bedroom door frame and of course when she ripped them down…off came the paint.  Yup, those are the little things that never get done.  So take this week to walk around with a paint brush and touch up all those little spots.  It never takes very long, the hardest part is just getting motivated to do the job.

Off hand, I know I have at least 3 or 4 paint touch ups to do.  So now is the time!  To help motivate you, send me pictures of your touch ups on my Facebook group HERE!  I would love to see your progress!

3. Hang Up Pictures or Decor

I understand this can be hard.  It takes time to figure out exactly where you want pictures, so take some time this week to figure it out!  Most times, when we have things to hang up…they just sit in our basements or on our floors for the longest time.  The hardest part is stopping and actually taking the time to figure out where you want something hung.  Nothing finishes off a space like decorations up on the wall!   So don’t put it off any longer.

4. Buy A New Hand Towel or Dish Towel

For less than $5 you can purchase a new hand towel or dish towel.  Adding something new to your kitchen or bathroom can make a huge difference!  You can buy something that adds color, or something neutral…but the addition of a new towel freshens up your space.

Keep in mind, when buying a new dish towel, to purchase something that is more seasonal rather than holiday specific.  It will allow you to use it longer, such as a pretty red plaid could be used for Christmas,Valentines day, Memorial Day and for the Fourth of July!  If you love holidays and want a dish towel or hand towel for each one, just make sure you have plenty of room to store them!

But in the end, if you don’t buy towels very often, then it might serve you better to find something you can use longer.

5.  Buy A New Throw Pillow Cover

Adding a new throw pillow changes the whole look of your couch or bed.  To save money, find a throw pillow cover for much less.  I love changing the look of my pillows.  However, if you buy a new pillow every season…you won’t have any place to store all those pillows!  So spend less and save the extra storage by buying covers!  Make sure your current pillows will fit the cover you are buying, otherwise buying a new cover and then having to buy a new form…kind of defeats the purpose.   So just double check first, and then you will be well on your way to fabulous pillows.
