Your Kids Will Love This Simple Holiday Wind Catcher

Your Kids Will Love This Simple Holiday Wind Catcher

We love having family over for Memorial Day!  I love grilling out, lawn games and digging into a huge bowl of strawberry shortcake.  This year I thought it would be fun to add some decorations outside, especially since that is where we spend most of the day.

As I looked for ideas, I came across this great wind catcher on the blog Multiples and More.  I thought the wind catcher would be perfect for my kids to make for our Memorial Day Celebration.  They would be perfect hanging from our pergola over the back deck, plus I could use them for the fourth of July too!

To get supplies, I ran to the dollar store.  I found the table cloths I needed, then had the rest of the supplies at home already.  It doesn’t get much easier than that.

To Get Started You Will Need

Floral Wire

Plastic Table Cloths (Red, White and Blue)

String

Razor Blade or Scissors

Ruler (Optional)

Making The Wind Catchers

Start by cutting the floral wire to make a circle.  I started with wire that was 3 feet long, but as my kids began making them, we realized that was too big.  I probably cut another 6 inches off and that size circle was much better.   One thing to consider is the wire is bendable.  If you are like me and like a crisp circle you may want to use something stiffer.  I thought about trying an embroidery hoop next time.

Cutting Strips

I began cutting strips the width of the table cloth and two inches wide.  However, my scissors were not very sharp.  I did not like that the edges were jagged.  My husband grabbed a razor blade and a ruler to cut a cleaner edge.  It worked so much better!  If you have sharp scissors you probably would be OK.

To cut the strips, we folded the table cloth in half and then two more times.  This allowed us to get 4 strips out of every cut.

We cut the entire table cloths into strips, but you could probably cut less if you wanted.

Tying the Strips

To tie the strips, start by folding them in half.

Then place the loop under the wire, so it is inside the hoop.

Open up the loop.

Pull the two ends over the hoop and through the loop.

Then pull tight.

Have fun with the pattern!  You could do sections of all red, then all white, and then all blue.  Another option would be to do a section of all blue and then mix the rest…red, white, red, white.  So many possibilities!

Once it was finished, I tied a string to the wind catcher to hang.

It looks so great blowing in the wind!!  My kids each made one, so we have three!

Such a fun and simple way to decorate the back deck!  I hope you have a great time celebrating your Holiday weekend!  Thanks for checking out my post!!
